"A December to Remember” in Ward 8 host by local Leaders and Community Based Businesses

Washington, D.C. — December 19, 2021

Before Capetown DMV was officially formed, a coalition of local leaders and community-based organizations came together to host the inaugural “A December 2 Remember” Charity Event at CheckIt Enterprises in the heart of Ward 8.

This powerful collaboration was led by Dimosha Smith, Kenya Metters, Gelinda Allen of No Slide Zone, Charnal Chaney of Bold Yoga, Ronald Moten of CheckIt Enterprises, Eisha F. Lee of Friends of Douglass, Hani Ahmed of Black Egyptian, Val Suarez of PositiveChalkTalk, Simona James of PorchFestDC, Sarah Actors of 4DMV Kids, King of NWA Autoclub, Tenika Cherese of Bully is Not Dope, and Reginia Summers of Never Black Down.

Together, these individuals and organizations joined forces to create a day centered on giving, joy, and community connection — providing support and love to families and residents of Southeast D.C. during the holiday season.

The event featured free haircuts, braids, and beauty services provided by independent barbers, stylists, braiders, and nail technicians who volunteered their time and talent. Guests also received clothing, hot meals, toys, and hygiene essentials, ensuring everyone could experience hope, dignity, and care. The atmosphere was filled with music and excitement, thanks to DJ Akademics, who kept the crowd moving and smiling throughout the day.

“This event was created out of love for our community,” said Felicia Webb, one of the volunteer organizers. “We wanted to show people that they are seen, valued, and supported — not just during the holidays, but all year long.”

A December 2 Remember was made possible through the generosity, collaboration, and leadership of dedicated community partners, volunteers, and small business owners who transformed the space into a vibrant hub of compassion and service.

While Capetown DMV had not yet been established, this event became the foundation for what would later evolve into the organization’s mission — to build self-esteem within underserved communities by providing free grooming and beauty services while creating pathways to employment, entrepreneurship, and licensure.

From this spirit of unity and service, a movement was born — proving that when community comes together, every season can truly be A December to Remember.
